Sony details PlayStation app for iOS and Android

Yes, you read that headline correctly. Sony’s European site announced earlier today that an official PlayStation app will be hitting the App Store and Android Marketplace soon, but not in the US. The current list of countries on tap for the app include: UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands. In the announcement post Sony deatails the features available in the initial 1.0 version of the app:

  • Check out your PlayStation Network trophies and keep up to date with your friends’ games and online status.
  • Discover all the latest games, news and hardware for your PlayStation 3PSP and PlayStation 2.
  • Read all the announcements on the European PlayStation.Blog.
  • Share your favourite products or news with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or via e-mail.

It sounds like these are just the baseline features they wanted to get in the app before getting it out though. According to the post, “There are tons more features we are planning to bring to this app in the next few months.”

This sets an exciting precedent. Sony taking baby steps toward making their platform more accessible is a good thing for consumers. It may even help pave the way for Microsoft and Nintendo to do the same– but really, who are we kidding? We will never see a Xbox LIVE app on iOS or Android while Windows Phone 7 is around, but we can add that to the list of things to hope for along with a US release of this PS app.
