Unreal Engine comes to Flash with Epic Citadel demo

Five months ago, Epic Games announced the Unreal Engine 3 would be coming to Flash. Their tech demo was impressive, floating a camera through a 3D environment with a stable framerate and considerable detail. Now that kind of experience is available for you to control, as “Epic Citadel” is now available to try out on the Unreal Engine website.

You may recall that Epic Citadel was the tech demo for Unreal Engine on the iPad, allowing players to navigate an impressive 3D castle using touch controls. The demo led up to Infinity Blade, one of the first games on the iPad that matched quality with graphics in a AAA experience. Therefore it’s apt that Epic Citadel show off UE3 on Flash, giving some hint to the possibilities of a fully capable platform for this longstanding engine.

At GDC, Epic’s Mark Rein also showed off Unreal Tournament 3 and Dungeon Defenders and commented that there would be a performance hit running games within the CPU-intensive Adobe Flash. However, the smaller storage footprint and reduced hardware requirements are a suitable tradeoff, according to Rein. You can check out the demo right now after installing an update to Flash 11.2 in your browser of choice.
