Skyrim patch 1.5 brings ranged weapon and magic cinematic kills to PC

Todd Howard gave the keynote address at this year’s DICE conference and showed off a host of Skyrim projects the team worked on during their 2011 game jam week. He cautioned not to expect the suite of enhancements to actually be released, but with the 1.5 patch, the first of them is already in the mix.

Currently available to all via a Steam beta opt-in, patch 1.5 fleshes out the cinematic kills in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The base game already contained these kill flourishes for melee kills, but this update expands the variety of animations, and introduces the colorful adversary-enders to ranged weapon and magic kills.

Here’s the full list of new features:

  • New cinematic kill cameras for projectile weapons and spells
  • New kill moves and animations for melee weapons
  • Shadows on grass available (PC)
  • Smithing skill increases now factor in the created item’s value
  • Improved visual transition when going underwater
  • Improved distance LOD transition for snowy landscapes

A whole slew of bugs have also been addressed with this patch (see source post). There is no word on when this patch will hit consoles, or whether the non-PC versions will receive the new cinematic kills.
