Nintendo held another of its Nintendo Direct online press conferences late yesterday with a number of announcements regarding the 3DS. Two big franchise titles were announced as coming to Japan in a few short months.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 was the biggest reveal. There aren’t many details to be had, but Nintendo President Satoru Iwata did provide a glimpse at the game with a few screenshots, and they certainly look like a New Super Mario Bros. title. Nintendo’s iconic plumber’s next outing on the 3DS is slated for August in Japan

A new entry in the Animal Crossing series is on the way as well in Tobidase Doubutsu no Mori. Again details are scarce here, and the screenshots on display look Animal Crossing-y. The 3DS entry in the series is set to hit Japan this fall.

Other minor details were also revealed including word on a new firmware update coming to the 3DS, patches set to fix some issues in previous releases, the first Project X trailer, and word of a Kirby collection coming to Wii.

[Update] New Super Mario Bros. 2 has now been confirmed for August in the US as well.

Oh, from the screenshots, it’s “New Super Mario Bros.” 2, and not New “Super Mario Bros. 2″.   I was actually more interested when I thought it was the latter!
