THQ cancels Saints Row: The Third DLC, to be folded into sequel

Saint’s Row: The Third received a warm reception late last year, and has seen a number of smaller DLC packs since release, but “Enter the Dominatrix” was set to be its first substantial add-on. That is no longer the plan as publisher THQ has announced that the expansion has now been canceled in favor of rolling the development resources and content into a full-fledged sequel.

“When I looked at the Enter The Dominatrix expansion in production at Volition, I was blown away by the ideas and desire to expand the fiction of the franchise,” said Jason Rubin, THQ’s President. “I asked the team what it could achieve given more time, more resources, and a broader scope for the project. We all agreed we wanted to play that game. When it comes to Saints Row, it’s clear our fans want bigger, better, and even more over the top, and that’s why Enter The Dominatrix will now be incorporated into a vastly expanded, full-fledged sequel, scheduled for calendar 2013.”

Added Rubin, “We believe the potential for this sequel is far greater as a full-priced, full-length, high quality, connected experience.”

This is the kind of news that is hard to be upset about. Although it would be nice to get the DLC and a sequel, if both are not possible, this seems like the right way to go. Also, the current working title of the next game in the series is “The Next Great Sequel in the Saints Row Franchise”– how great is that?
