Gears of War: Judgment release date, OverRun trailer released

Though Judgment might be discluded from the core Gears of War Trilogy, that doesn’t disqualify it from making some advancements in the franchise formula. That’s made abundantly clear in its latest trailer, which gives a tutorial of the new OverRun mode.

OverRun seems to take the Beast mode idea from Gears of War 3 and step it up to an entirely different level. Instead of just having one human-controlled Locust team attacking an AI-controlled group of human defenders, OverRun pits two teams of five Gears and Locust against each other in class-based objective combat. While most of the Locust classes act in much the same way as they did in GoW3 (with minor modifications for balance reasons), human classes are completely new to the game. Check out their special abilities below:

  • Engineer: Repairs fortifications
  • Soldier: Providing ammo crates to team members
  • Medic: Healing/reviving grenade
  • Scout: Can reach overwatch perches, has a tagging grenade that briefly activates a sonar to locate enemies through walls

Scoring is based on the time it takes each team (as Locust) to destroy the opposing team’s (as COG) generator, meaning each team has the opportunity to excel as both races in a given match. The tutorial video gives an example time of a round lasting about five minutes, so don’t expect this mode to take as long as Beast did in Gears of War 3.

Comic-Con birthed not only this trailer but also a release date from Epic Games, indicating that Gears of War: Judgment will be heading to Xbox 360 on March 19th, 2013.
