Obsidian’s Project Eternity Kickstarted in 24 hours

Kickstarter continues to be the prime place for bigger names to get their dream projects off the ground. The latest success story is Obsidian Entertainment’s Project Eternity which reached its funding goal in the first day of funding.

Project Eternity is billed by Obsidian as the studio’s “dream project.” For those who don’t know, Obsidian Entertainment is the development house behind some of the biggest RPGs of the last decade– games like Icewind Dale, Planescape Torment, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, and most recently Fallout: New Vegas.

The studio is looking to capture the feel of old-school PC RPGs built on the Infinity Engine, a game engine the studio created and spawned classics such as Baldur’s Gate and Planescape Torment. The studio says that this will be a PC RPG through-and-through.

Project Eternity will take the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur’s Gate, add in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and tie it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment.

The $1.1 million goal has already been met, but Obsidian has also revealed a number of stretch goals that cover the gamut of expansion to multiple platforms to all new character races, regions, and more. With 30 days left, something tells us that those stretch goals will be met.
